HE BEAT HER is a cleverly constructed and beautifully drawn courtroom visual novel/text adventure hybrid in which you only have time to perform 1 (or 2) of the possible 220 actions before the jury make their verdict about your client – but can keep rewinding time and replaying the same scene to find different outcomes.
In HE BEAT HER you are a lawyer tasked with defending a young man who’s charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend. At the moment it’s his word against hers so it could go either way, but you have a very limited amount of time to sway the jury. In fact you can only perform one action (occasionally more) before the case ends and they make their decision. This isn’t a problem though as once the case is finished, you can instantly rewind time and start again, using the knowledge you gained on the last playthrough to influence your actions this time.
You type your actions into the text box in the center of the screen using single word commands much like in a text adventure. These actions will generally give you more information about the case and may affect the outcome, but to really get to the bottom of who’s to blame, you’ll need to do some serious digging.
It’s a well constructed game that has some interesting twists and demonstrates how small, easily missed clues can dramatically effect the outcome of a trial. Highly recommended.
