Railgun is a very cool looking 2.5D side-scrolling shooter that plays like a blend of Resogun and Missile Command, as you use your Railgun Perimeter Defense System to blast interstellar debris, comets, enemies and huge bosses that threaten your home city.
In Railgun you take on the role of a pilot for a high-tech drone tank that is attached to rails that circle the perimeter of your city. This effectively means your tank patrols around the perimeter of the 3D city but shoots enemies on a 2D plane, making for a 2D/3D hybrid style of shoot-em-up gameplay akin to Resogun.
You have a selection of eight drone weapons (main cannon, minigun, shotgun, flack cannon, Tesla cannon, rail cannon, lighting gun and rockets) and five super weapons, all of which can be upgraded throughout the game by battling bosses and by collecting minerals from the meteors you blast.
There’s a lot of deadly deadly stuff hurtling towards your beloved city, each of which poses a different type of threat. Asteroids smash anything that gets in their way – comments can freeze you to the tracks, meteors burn you and your surroundings, magnetoids actively target you and hurtle towards you at speed and huge nuclear satellites rain down pain from the heavens. If that’s not enough to contend with, then there’s also the matter of the epic boss fights at the end of each stage that will really test your mettle.
It’s a very impressive looking game, packed with spectacular visual effects, OTT weaponry and fast, frantic shoot-em-up action. A slick 360 degree side scrolling shooter well worth taking for a spin!
