Baby Steps is a wonderfully ridiculous physics-based QWOP-like where an unemployed loser learns to put one foot in front of the other.
Currently in development by the creators of APE OUT and Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy, Baby Steps is a literal walking simulator with plenty of physics-based mayhem. The game follows the story of a young(ish) man called Nate, who has no job, lives with his parents and sits on the couch all day. Then one day he’s mysteriously transported to a strange land where he’ll learn the ability to put one foot in front of another.
You control the movement of your legs individually using the triggers and the left analog stick. This is pretty tricky initially, but you get used to it pretty quickly. That said, it can be easy to trip and fall – which can be costly depending how high you are!
The Baby Steps demo features a vast open mountainous area to explore, filled with fun secrets and perilous routes. You can’t die, but as in Getting Over It, falls can really set you back. On your adventure you also meet various oddball characters, each with some very funny well delivered dialogue.
It’s a fantastic game with a great sense of humor, fun walking mechanics and superb environmental design. You could spend hours wandering/stumbling around the demo and still not find everything, and when you do find something/someone, it’s a real delight. Highly recommended.
