Dark Places is an intense psychological horror adventure that blends survival horror, platforming, puzzles and run n’ gun gameplay as you slowly descend into madness.
In Dark Places you take on the role of a daemon hunter who explores a hellish labyrinthine world searching for answers and dealing with nightmarish creatures as he slips into madness. The visual style of the game is reminiscent of classic 90’s shooters like Quake, but the gameplay incorporates a diverse array of elements, including survival horror, platforming and puzzle solving while delivering its intriguing narrative via scraps of paper.
Dark Places does have a few rough edges and irritating bugs (be sure to save often), but there’s a lot to like about it too. The mixture of game styles means you never know what to expect when you enter a level, the puzzle design is pretty creative and it’s got a very dark and grimy visual style that helps create a dread-filled and foreboding atmosphere. It’s a unique game which will infuriate at times, but if you stick with it then you’ll discover that there’s a lot going on beneath the surface of this retro styled horror adventure.
Important Note: Save often and use multiple saves. Make sure you have plenty of ammo before entering level 10 (you’ll need it!)
