Evergate is a beautiful 2D puzzle platforming adventure where you use beams of light to help you traverse its cleverly constructed levels.
In Evergate you take control of a childlike soul, named Ki, as she makes her way through the afterlife. You can run and jump as in most platformers, but your real party trick is your Soulflame – a beam of light that can harness the power trapped within special crystals.
Different types of crystals have different special powers – such as teleportation or propelling you in a direction. To unleash the power of the crystals your beam of Soulflame has to pass through them and then connect with a surface that glows white with “The Source”. This means you effectively have to move yourself so that you, the crystal and the Source are all in a straight line.
The mechanics of your Soulflame are a little complex to describe, but it’s easy to get to grips with when you see it in action and allows for some very creative puzzle design. The Kickstarter demo takes around 20 minutes to play through and really impresses with its high quality artwork, interesting afterlife game world and inventive align-to-shoot puzzle platforming gameplay. A stylish and cerebral puzzle platforming adventure well worth checking out.
