EVOLUTION: Versicorae Domlion is a horror RPG adventure that blends Lovecraftian horror with Pokémon-esque RPG battles and visual novel elements as it weaves five dark stories in a grim 1930’s world.
In EVOLUTION: Versicorae Domlion you follow the stories of four different strangers who are connected by a mysterious stranger called Alexis who dabbles in the dark arts and collects monsters. These monsters are a far cry from the Charmanders and Squirtles of Pokémon – they’re grotesque Lovecraftian abominations that feed on human flesh and will feed on you too if you’re not careful.
The Kickstarter demo build introduces you to Alexis and the four characters who are dealing with some inner demons (and some physical ones too). Alexis helps them resolve their inner conflicts and defeat the monsters, but he’s not doing it out of the kindness of his heart – he collects the monsters after they’ve been defeated for some macabre purpose.
As it’s essentially the beginning of the game, the battles in the current build of EVOLUTION: Versicorae Domlion are very easy, but they do give a good indication that the full game will have a fairly deep combat system. Each character has their own unique skills, strengths and weaknesses, which should come into play more with tougher battles later on in the game when the characters team up.
It does have a few rough edges and the pixel art and hand drawn art styles don’t always blend as well as they could, but it’s a promising game with an interesting story and some excellent monster designs. With some more challenging battles and a better fusion of the two art styles it could be an excellent horror RPG adventure. A Monster catching game where the monsters you catch are truly monstrous!
