Halflight is a beautiful and surreal Taiwanese ghost story in which a young boy strays into an unsettling phantom world while searching for his brother.
In Halflight you take on the role of Xi-Sheng, a young boy who lives in a rural area of Taiwan with his parents and brother. Xi-Sheng is sent out by his mother to fetch his brother from where he’s playing and bring him home for dinner. However, things take a surreal twist as Xi-Sheng slips into a strange phantom world full of dark spirits.
The demo build takes around twenty minutes to play through and really impresses with it’s beautiful Unreal Engine 4 powered game world and intriguing otherworldly narrative. There are some fairly simple puzzles to solve, but it’s the world of Halflight that really stands out. It can be a creepy and unsettling place to explore, but it’s more a place of wonder than all-out horror – much like Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away. It’s a place that blurs the boundary between reality and fantasy, where spirits roam and familiar places are coated with a layer of dreams. It makes for a very unique otherworldly adventure full of dark spirits and dreamlike wonder.
Important Note: When the game originally boots up all the text is in Taiwanese. You can change it to English in the options menu though. If you’re struggling to figure out how to switch it to English, just watch the start of this video.
