Magical Monster Land is a beautifully animated and very tough retro platforming adventure that plays like a blend of Super Mario Bros 3, Donkey Kong Country and Wonder Boy as you explore its vibrant world, discovering secrets, collecting shiny stuff and battling deadly bosses.
In Magical Monster Land you take Buster on a 16-bit styled platforming adventure that draws inspiration from classics of the genre. Visually it’s reminiscent of the Wonder Boy/Adventure Island games, but the gameplay and level design is fondly reminiscent of Mario and Donkey Kong Country (the world map in particular is a nice callback to Super Mario Bros 3).
Exploring the colorful retro world of Magical Monster Land is a delight. Each level is jam packed with hidden secrets and collectibles and the difficulty gets rage-inducingly tough later on (in a good way). The audio and visuals are excellent too, with a catchy soundtrack and big, chunky sprites that have lots of character.
It’s a tough game that’ll punish you for your mistakes, but it’s hard to get angry at such a cheerful and creative homage to the 16-bit platformer. Highly recommended.
