Our Dirge is a contemplative narrative-driven adventure with a touch of supernatural horror, which follows two friends as they explore their old school.
In Our Dirge you join Jack and Neal as they sneak into their old school for a look around. It’s filled with memories, and eerily, very little has changed since they went there years ago. Jack is an introverted academic and Neal is an abrasive, over-confident but likeable extrovert who doesn’t care much about what people think about him.
The two are a bit of an odd couple, but they were best friends at school and had social skill sets that made up for each other’s shortfallings. As they explore the school they reminisce about their time at school, with the majority of memories told from Neal’s point of view. This may just be because Neal is the most assertive of the two, but there may also be something else at play.
The Our Dirge demo takes around 45 minutes to play through and really impresses with the detailed pixel art environments and beautifully written dialogue. There’s not much in the way of gameplay (it’s essentially a visual novel/walking sim created in RPG Maker), but the storytelling is excellent and the characters are well fleshed out, making you emotionally invested in their lives. There is a real sense of doom in the air though, so maybe don’t get too invested in them!
