PHASE ZERO is a Resident Evil inspired old school fixed camera survival horror game where two survivors attempt to escape a monster-filled harbor town.
Aiming to resurrect the golden age of survival horror, PHASE ZERO blends classic design philosophy with modern refinements, embracing the aesthetic DNA of PSX-era masterpieces through prerendered backgrounds and fixed camera angles. Set in 1994’s Flint Peak, a desolate harbor town besieged by both snowstorm and mysterious epidemic, Players alternate between two desperate protagonists – Mary and Guy.
Mary, a newcomer journalist, and Guy, an injured engineer, have to navigate streets overrun with grotesque, cancerous abominations. Human skin husks litter the environment while organic matter bursts through buildings and infrastructure, creating a nightmarish landscape that demands strategic resource management and fight-or-flight decision making.
The PHASE ZERO demo takes around 30 minutes to play through and drops you in at the deep end right at the start with you waking up in a zombie-filled hospital. You need to solve puzzles and blast zombies as you try to make your escape, with a little help from a friend who chats to you over the intercom.
It’s a superb throwback to classic survival horror gaming with excellent PS1 styled visuals, great environmental design and one of the most grotesque ways to collect a crank handle you’re likely to see in a game. Highly recommended.
