Snake Vs Invaders is a fun little arcade game that blends elements of Snake, Space Invaders, Arkanoid and SuperHot as you use your snake attempt to defend your colony from an alien invasion.
It’s surprising how many different gameplay elements are in Snake Vs Invaders, considering it was created for the latest Js13kGames game jam, which requires the file size of the entire game to be less than 13kb. In the game you control a large snake-like ship that can’t shoot, but can deflect projectiles back at enemies by hitting them with its body. You need to use this ability to deflect bullets away from your colony for long enough to survive each level.
As you progress through each level new enemies are introduced that can offer some serious problems. A good tactic can be to just ram the most troublesome ones, but it does temporarily diminish your health and your tail size. As in SuperHot, speed is also a factor in Snake Vs Invaders, with the enemy projectiles moving faster if you move faster, so you can’t just dash across the screen all the time. It makes for a tricky little game, but the points you earn in each level can earn you permanent upgrades, such as a longer tail and artillery, which can increase your chances of success.
It’s a simple looking, but very addictive little game that manages to squeeze a lot of great ideas into a game that weighs in at under 13kb. Highly recommended.
