Space Dragons is a challenging R-Type/UN Squadron-esque old school side-scrolling shoot ‘em up where you jump in a little ship and attempt to fend off a massive alien invasion.
In Space Dragons aliens from the moon have invaded Earth and are taking control of military technology as they attempt to wipe out the human race. You step into the shoes of one of four brave pilots who set out to fight back and send those aliens packing.
Although the boss battles do sometimes stray into bullet hell territory, for the most part Space Dragons is a good old fashioned R-Type style side-scrolling shoot ‘em up. Enemies attack in waves, there’s a selection of cool power-ups and learning boss attack patterns is key for survival. Power-ups are temporary, but you can unlock permanent upgrades at the end of each level.
There is a gun overheating mechanic that gets a little infuriating at the moment (conserving bullets to manage heat levels isn’t very fun in the heat of battle), but other than that, Space Dragons is off to a great start. The visuals are beautiful, it plays very smoothly, there’s a lot going on on-screen, and the bosses offer a real challenge. A great little slice of retro shoot ‘em up fun.
