SteamDolls: Order of Chaos is a brutal and stylish steampunk metroidvania action platforming adventure where your violent-tempered anarchist (voiced by Metal Gear Solid’s David Hayter) attempts to stoke the flames of revolution in an oppressive authoritarian city.
In SteamDolls: Order of Chaos you take control of a Deathstroke-esque badass called “The Whisper” who uses a mixture of stealth, platforming, melee combat and ranged attacks to make his way through a grimy steampunk city. His aim is to uncover a conspiracy that will shake the foundations of the city and help start an uprising and overthrow the corrupt authoritarian government. There’s also the small matter of a floating naked witch that appears to you in visions and will no doubt have an impact on your noble endeavors.
The SteamDolls: Order of Chaos Alpha demo features a sizeable chunk of the city to explore and takes around 45 minutes to play through. The sprawling steampunk city is beautifully rendered and is full of deadly guards, hazards and automated defenses to deal with. It’s a challenging game, but not frustratingly so, and when you get to grips with it you feel like a real badass.
You’re equipped with some deadly arm-mounted blades and energy-based projectiles which can be used to take out enemies, but if possible then it’s best to go for stealth kills – not only do they reward you with brutal kill animations, but they also replenish your health (which is always handy). At the moment the stealth can be a little hit or miss, with the guards often becoming alerted even when you’re sneaking (particularly when jumping onto a platform), but it is very satisfying when you pull off a stealth kill.
It’s very impressive action platforming metroidvania that really seems to have it all – bags of style, brutal combat, high quality animation, a grimy cyberpunk setting, a naked witch and David Hayter. What more could you possibly want?
