Sunless Skies is a highly anticipated top down narrative-focused space exploration game with horror and RPG elements, set in an alternate reality where a Queen Victoria-led British Empire looks to expand across the heavens.
Sunless Skies is the follow up to Failbetter Games’ critically acclaimed Sunless Sea and continues to build on the rich lore of the Fallen London Universe. It’s set 10 years after Sunless Sea and transports the action from the seats the skies as you embark on an epic journey into the wilderness of space where something is killing off the stars one-by-one.
As well as being able to create your own custom character and origin story, you can also set your own ambitions and victory conditions. The decisions you make during the game will unlock new facets of your character and will also affect your affiliations with different segments of society – allowing you to become anything from The Hero of New Winchester to The Bloody-Handed Murderer of Suns.
Your steam-powered spacecraft is all that separates you from the emptiness of space as you explore Sunless Skies’ rich Fallen London Universe. You can customise it in different ways to suit your expeditions or even purchase new vessels, allowing you to specialise in combat, exploration or transportation. As well as dealing with hostile pirates and other (weirder) enemies, you’ll also have to balance your resources and keep your crew happy, or risk a mutiny. Die and you’ll start back at the last major port you visited, but your actions will still be remembered.
It’s a very promising game that looks set to offer a beautiful, atmospheric and dark take on space exploration gaming with its Universe packed full of mystery, opportunity and danger.
