The Lost Delinquents of Rollings High is a very weird Lovecraft inspired Anime-styled visual novel where an oddball group of high-schoolers try to figure out the secrets of their town before graduation.
In The Lost Delinquents of Rollings High you take on the role of Marty, a high-school boy who lives in an isolated town somewhere in the mountains in the 1980s. It seems like a fairly traditional town and there are lots of friendly (and a few unfriendly) characters to meet. But the town harbours some dark secrets – will you and your buddies be able to discover them before graduation?
Aside from the beginning and the end, don’t expect a huge amount of horror in the current build of The Lost Delinquents of Rollings High – it’s more about setting the scene and getting to know the large cast of characters. It’s still very much a work in progress, but on the whole it’s a very impressive take on the visual novel genre. Characters are almost entirely voice acted, the artwork is excellent, it’s got a great sense of humor, there’s a good amount of interactivity and there are LOTS of different branching pathways (though only one ending at the moment). The only irritation is that your best friend (May) is incredibly loud and annoying – which is fine in small doses, but spending more than a few minutes in her company starts to grate.
Even in these early stages of development the production values, voicework, artwork and narrative are better than the majority of visual novels. The setting has a lot of promise and it does a great job of blending humor, friendship and horror. A high-school horror adventure well worth enrolling in.
