UNDERTALE is a wonderfully inventive RPG which draws favorable comparisons to the MOTHER (Earthbound) series, that features a witty story, interesting puzzles and a truly innovative skill-based combat system that allows you to befriend your attackers.
The glorious retro pixel art visual style of UNDERTALE belies some truly innovative gameplay and game design. The combat system is unlike anything you’ll of seen before – when battles commence you have the option to fight or talk your way out of trouble. Both are completely viable options – the finished game promises to even allow you to become friends with all the bosses.
When the battles commence, skill is a major factor – time your attacks for maximum effect, and then dodge enemy attacks by avoiding projectiles in a way reminiscent of top-down shooters. Each enemy has different attack patterns for you to learn and avoid, and they can even team up to make things even more difficult. This Shmup’-style projectile avoidance battle system is an amazing touch, that really spices up the gameplay.
The world of UNDERTALE is as well crafted and surprising as the battle system, with clever puzzle design, wonderful pixel art visuals, interesting characters, a great sense of humor and an intriguing story. Still early in development and Greenlit on Steam within 6 days, UNDERTALE is shaping up very nicely indeed, a fun Pixel Art RPG packed with charm, character and innovation. Expect to see it’s combat system ripped off in other games in the future.
