Unfamiliar is an incredibly powerful and emotional hand drawn narrative experience that sees you and your family trying to cope with the your onset of Alzheimer’s disease.
In Unfamiliar you take on the role of an aging, happily married woman with a loving husband and a loving family. The game opens at Christmas time, with your son, daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter coming to visit. It’s a joyous occasion, but something not quite right, you’re starting to forget things – just little things of no real consequence, but it’s clear your family have noticed and are worried (and so are you).
Alzheimer’s is a slow acting disease that can take years to slide from mild forgetfulness to full blown dementia. Unfamiliar takes you on a journey through the whole process in a thoughtful and beautifully written way. You view the world through the eyes of a woman who goes from being able to recall memories with pinpoint clarity to barely being able to remember her own name and not recognising the faces of her own family.
Unfamiliar does deal with serious and sombre subject matter, but the writing and artwork make it a very engaging experience. It weaves a sad tale, but there are moments of joy in there too – such as reliving the day your husband proposed to you and seeing the love that your family clearly has for you. A beautiful and heartfelt story about dealing with a horrible disease. Highly recommended.
