UnMetal – Beta Demo

UnMetal is a hilarious 2D stealth action adventure that pokes fun at the Metal Gear games as a wise-cracking hero tells the story of how he escaped from a heavily guarded Russian military base.

In UnMetal you take on the role of Jesse Fox, a Snake-esque soldier (who isn’t a soldier) that got thrown in jail in 1972 by a crack commando squad for a crime he didn’t commit (A-Team fans take note). Miraculously he managed to escape but was shot down while piloting a Russian chopper by the US army. He now has a lot of explaining to do to the officer that’s interrogating him, but Jesse may not be the most reliable narrator…

As Jesse recounts his story you act it out a 2D stealth action adventure. He may not be quite as stealthy as Snake, but Jesse more than makes up for it with bravado, stupidity and his fondness of punching things. He can distract guards, sneak attack around corners and collect and combine objects to create useful items (such as combining a familiar looking eye-patch with a stick to create a catapult).

The UnMetal Beta demo build features around 30 minutes of gameplay and sees you breaking out of your cell and sneaking/punching your way through the base. The stealth action gameplay is fairly forgiving and thankfully there’s no sneaking around slowly under cardboard boxes.

It’s shaping up to be a fantastic game and it’s nice to see a stealth action game that doesn’t take itself too seriously (or at all seriously) for a change. The pixel art animation is excellent and the gameplay is fun and fast paced. It’s the writing and the voice acting that really make it special though – it’s packed full of great gags and pretty much everything Jesse says is hilariously ridiculous. Highly recommended.

  1. Yup, I’ll get it when it’s out. Jesse looks like Charley Sheen as Snake. This looks like a Hot Shots version of Metal Gear. LOL!

  2. Certainly keeping an eye on this one.

Don’t know if it’s a bug or a feature, but when tossing a coin behind a chain link fence, the guards will see the coin, but will walk right through the fence to get to it, which can make ambushing them a bit tricky.

The little details though, like the eye patch, are just golden.
