Vengeance of Mr. Peppermint is a gloriously brutal 2D side-scrolling beat ‘em up inspired by Korean crime movies, such as Oldboy.
In Vengeance of Mr. Peppermint you are a hard-boiled (and rather unhinged) detective who was abducted as a child with his sister. He escaped but unfortunately his sister didn’t and now he’s on a quest for vengeance, no matter how many bodies he leaves in his wake.
The gameplay in Vengeance of Mr. Peppermint is fast, fun and incredibly brutal. You have a nice variety of attacks and combos at your disposal, and you can also use weapons. Perhaps most enjoyable are the finishers which allow you to grab and kill enemies in brutal ways and even use environmental objects in the process.
There are some rough edges (such as the UI, scene transitions and the dialogue) but the core gameplay is a lot of fun and the pixel art animation is superb. It does a very good job of emulating the vibe of Korean action movies and you almost feel sorry for your enemies as you unleash ultraviolent bloody vengeance on them!
