Virginia – Beta Demo (Steam)

Virginia

Virginia is a beautiful, wordless cinematic first person thriller inspired by Twin Peaks, Fargo and True Detective, in which you attempt to find a missing boy who disappeared from his bedroom in Kingdom, Virginia.

In Virginia, you play a graduate FBI agent Anne Tarver, who works alongside seasoned investigator Maria Halperin, as they try and uncover what has happened to the young boy who went missing. This is no ordinary police procedural adventure though – surreal Twin Peaks-style dream sequences always keep you guessing what’s real and what’s not, and the entire game is played without a single line of dialogue being spoken.

Virginia’s wordless narrative is a bold piece of storytelling that requires players to pay attention to their surroundings and the characters they interact with. As there is no dialogue, nothing is spelled out for the player – they must observe character expressions and how the scenes play out in front of them and interpret what they mean.

As you’ll be paying close attention to your surroundings, it’s fortunate that they’re so breathtakingly beautiful to look at though! Virginia’s painterly-styled visuals are not only a joy to behold, they add a add a touch of dream-like magic it’s world, giving you a sense that anything could happen in this small american town. This dream-like atmosphere is compounded by the clever use of editing as you transition between scenes and the fabulous soundtrack recorded by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra at Smecky Studio (Mulholland Drive & Lost Highway).

From start to finish the Virginia Beta Demo is a beautiful and riveting experience. It’s wordless, surreal, dreamlike world, intriguing characters and captivating narrative help to create a game world that you never want to leave. The full game releases in a month’s time (Sept 22nd), but after playing through the Beta Demo it feels like a lifetime away – we really can’t wait to see more of this incredible small town American mystery.  Highly recommended.
