XYDONIA is a great new side scrolling shoot ’em up inspired by 90’s Japanese arcade classics, in which you travel across beautiful pixel art backdrops, collect power-ups and blast your way through waves of enemies flying in formation.
Gameplay in XYDONIA is fondly reminiscent of classics like R-Type and Gradius. Less of a bullet hell shooter and more of a traditional side scrolling shoot em up, with you memorising attack formation patterns instead of weaving your way through screens full of bullets.
The game is playable in single player or local multiplayer, with a choice of characters, each with their own ship and weaponry. There’s a nice selection of power-ups available as you blast your way through the alien menace, upgrading your arsenal and allowing you to switch between two different fire-types.
It’s still early in development, but the Alpha build is a great taster of things to come, with tight controls, excellent pixel art visuals and an awesome retro chip-tune soundtrack. A well crafted piece of retro arcade blasting.
